Surprise the Teacher!

I am so excited to share my take on this great idea I found for a teacher gift! We made these for my daughter's teachers and they thought they were such a great idea.  Such a fun way to surprise the amazing teachers that share so much of themselves with your child each day!

"Those that know, do. Those that understand, teach." -Aristotle

The first step is to gather all of the supplies needed:

  • An unopened pull tab can

  • Various ribbons and trims

  • Cardstock or paper

  • Tags

  • Candy

  • Tissue Paper

  • Glue gun

  • Scissors

  • Pen

Next,  turn the can over and opened the bottom of it with a handheld can opener.  It needs to be the type of can opener that cuts the edge of the can, not the inside edge of the lid.  Pour out the contents and use them, or store them in the fridge for dinner tonight!

Next, peel the label off the can so you can design your own label.  I found that removing label gave you a better surface to attach your label. Wash and dry the can THOROUGHLY, inside and out!!  For my label I used cardstock with adhesive on the back and used a bit of hot glue to assure that the edge would stay put.  Cut your paper to the size of the can between the two metal edges.  Cut a second piece narrower then the first and layer it on top of the other as seen  below.  If you are using non-adhesive paper, use a hot glue gun of other adhesive to attach the label to the can.

After you have the label securely affixed go to town decorating it.  I affixed ribbon and a decorative butterfly border.  I tied a tag to the ribbon and you could use that tag to write to and from on the back! This does not have to be strictly a teacher gift!  It could be a gift for an awesome babysitter, a gift for mother's day, a token gift for any special occasion really, or it could be used as unique gift wrap for a small gift (like jewelry!)

Now, turn your can over! Fill it up with some yummy treats, a small gift, crayons, or any other small items you can think of! Be creative! Your only limit is the size of the can! (You can do this with any size tab top can! Place a small amount of tissue paper below your treats to avoid any glue touching the treats and so it raises your treats up in the can!  Take your hot glue gun and run a bead of glue around the edge of the lid.  Quickly place it back on the can carefully aligning the lid to the bottom.  Use a paper towel to clean any oozy glue!

Turn you can back over after the glue has dried.  Now, tie some ribbon and a tag on the tab top of the can.  I suggest writing "pull me" or "Open Here" on the tag so that the receiver understands that they are to open the can! now your can is ready to give to that special teacher, or other person in your life that you want to show how much you appreciate them!!

Sit back and admire your handy work! They are really going to love the time and creativity you put into this special project!  This project came from an idea I saw on www.ourbestbites.com/2011/04/tin-can-treats-for-mothers-day/

Have fun with it!!  That is what it is all about!!! A Couple other Samples:
